IMPORTANCE OF DIALECTS
The dialects are called the unknown branches
of a language that were separated in ancient times. In other words, it is
called dialect in a language that has changed in distant regions for various
reasons, in terms of sound, syntax and vocabulary. In some dialects the sound and syntax
differ so differentiation occurs that sometimes new languages can emerge from
dialects. For example, as a result of the formation of different dialects of
Latin, French, Italian and Portuguese languages have emerged. There are two
criteria to distinguish between languages and dialects. One is the social and
political benchmark. According to this view, ’’ languages ‘’ are generally
prestigious, formal and written. Dialects are usually spoken, informal and
unimportant. The familiar expression of this view is as follows: ’’ Language is
a dialect with its army and navy”. If it is impossible to understand, they are
different languages. Of course, intelligibility must be continuous and
asymmetric. For this reason, when talking to a person, the comprehensibility
gives us the exact answers about whether the language or dialect is different.
The main reason for this is that a Turkish speaking person cannot understand
Azerbaijani or Uzbek Turkish.
Another issue is the adoption of basic
languages, not dialect. For example, they understand what is spoken when an
Italian and a Spanish are together. But these two languages are not accepted
in dialect because these languages have their own countries. They also have
political forces. For example, there are many different languages and
dialects in India. But the government accepts only Hindi and English because
the unity and integrity of the country does not accept the recognition of
another language.
As a result, after the emergence of
nationalism and racism, the language has become a part of political identity,
and the language has become a dialect with army and navy. Therefore, the political
situation is the main reason why dialects are translated into languages or
that languages are accepted as languages.
